that the God of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,
Reflection On This Scripture
Have you ever looked at the night sky and tried to count stars? Or wished you could reach up and touch the clouds so you can see if they really were balls of cotton like you thought? Man has always had a desire and a need to know more, to investigate, and to understand. This desire and inward yearning to know more was put into man by his creator. He created us with a desire to know him in all of his greatness.
Our God is knowable, yet he is incomprehensible. He reveals himself to us so that we might know of his goodness, his love, his mercy, his sovereignty. Yet because our God is infinite and we are finite, our limited minds can never fully grasp the fullness of our amazing God. He is so great and perfect, that we, as his creation, cannot fully fathom or understand his majesty. As we study God’s word and see what it reveals to us about God, we will most likely come to the point where we begin to realize that God is so great that we cannot fully comprehend or understand him.
This is not to discourage us from seeking him. The good thing is that every time we open the Scriptures God can teach us something new. It is actually quite exciting to know that for the rest of our lives we will be ever discovering new things about God. It’s like a treasure hunt of epic proportions. Although we spend every day of our life in Scripture study and prayer there will always be something more to learn. We will always be surprised by the grace he has towards us. But we need God to be able to know God. Jesus told us before leaving that he would send the Holy Spirit who would teach us all things and would guide us into all truth (John 16:13). The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit knows the depths of man and God. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of revelation that has been given to us to reveal God.
Every time we decide to open the word of God, we should ask the Spirit of God that dwells within us to teach us. He will lead us to himself. Only God can know God completely, and his promise is that he would be not only with us but in us.
