Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

Reflection On This Scripture

Paul prays that our eyes receive light, to know the hope God has called us to.  As God’s children there is a hope that we have as we look forward to our eternal destination.  We wait expectantly for the day we will meet the one who will bring us safe to our eternal home in heaven. Our eyes will close in this world and will reopen to the reality we’ve longingly awaited for as we are joined with our Savior Jesus Christ. That is our hope as Christians, we all know that we have been called to a hope in glory, to live for eternity surrounded by his glory.

Nobody wants to spend eternity in hell.  I’ve heard many people share the Gospel trying to convince people how bad it would be to go to hell and spend eternity there. Forgetting that eternity is more than just a place where we go.  We spend too much time focusing on where we spend eternity instead of who we get to spend eternity with. Heaven is where Jesus reigns and those who go to heaven get to spend eternity with Him. That is enough reason to want to go to heaven.

What then should be our daily hope until the time of our departure? The answer is Jesus. Knowing him, loving him, serving him, following him, being like him, talking with him, enjoying him. He is the King of heaven where we will live forever. Isn’t it a good idea that we begin to know him here? We focus so much of our attention on earthly things that we forget to invest ourselves into knowing the person who we will spend eternity with. When our lives are so filled with Jesus, reaching heaven just becomes a part of the wonderful experience of following Him.

When I was a child, I loved going to my grandparents’ house. I couldn’t wait to go there every weekend. Their house was bigger than mine, the food at their home was better than in mine, their bed was bigger than mine and I loved to take long naps on it. And even better than all those things was that my grandfather owned a candy factory right next door!
But despite all this luxury, the main reason why I most loved to go to their house was that I loved them. I loved spending time with my grandparents, not because of what they offered me, but because of the love they showed me. I couldn’t wait to be with them. Heaven is a wonderful desirable place but the person who reigns there is much more desirable.
