10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord
Reflection On This Scripture
The Church has had a bad rap throughout history. Oftentimes people that I interact with around Chicago that seem resistant to the gospel have come from church-hurt or misrepresentation of Jesus through the actions or attitudes of those professing to be a part of the “Church.” The one, true “Church” is not a building; it’s a community of people, united in Christ globally, sealed by the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the head and each member is an individual that is perfectly assembled by Him (see I Corinthians 12).
The body of Christ truly is a glorious reality especially when we are united in love as one. Jesus focused in on praying for the unity of love for the Church in one of His last prayers recorded before He went to the cross. This unity of love in the Church will witness to the unity of love between the Father and the Son. John 17:20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
Evangelism will be a natural by-product when the body of Christ is one and loves one another as Christ loves us. Isn’t it just like the enemy to attack the very body of Christ that is supposed to reflect Christ’s love, grace and mercy to an undeserving world, of which we all who make up the Church were once a part?
The angelic realm stands in awe of God’s wisdom as made known through His Church, united people of diversity…unity in diversity, not necessarily conformity! This is what we as members of His body have to fight: the compulsion to force everyone to be like us. I am not saying that we should not grow in godliness and Christ-likeness. The Bible will pierce our heart and show us where our hearts are to conform to Christ-likeness. But the diversity of worship, expression, cultures and activity of the Spirit through the members of His body will continue to be just that…diverse. The unity and acceptance of this diversity is what makes His body beautiful and testifies to the world of the power of His love.
See the following purpose statements throughout Ephesians thus far:
Eph 1:10 The mystery of His will…set forth in Christ…as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Eph 1:22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Eph 2:15 that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near
Eph 3:19 but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
