It has been our prayer that the Ephesians series has blessed you tremendously. We have been so blessed by reading and studying this letter in order to write daily devotionals for you. It is our prayer that these devotionals helped your mind be renewed with God’s Word and your hearts be transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit because of these Scriptures.
Paul focuses on heavy theology in the first half of the letter and focuses on heavy application in the second half of the letter because he believes that our theology will shape our living. With this in mind, we titled our Ephesians Series “Becoming What You Believe.”
In his book, Knowledge of the Holy, A.W. Tozer says, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us…We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God.” It is our desire as elders of CityLights Church that the theology found in the letter of the Ephesians has deepened your understanding of who God is truly and that your life will respond accordingly.
As we close out the Ephesians series and the daily devotionals, let’s summarize the big ideas of this letter together.
Ephesians 1 – We Are Blessed In Christ
We are blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing (1:3) and are chosen in Christ before the foundation of the world (1:4). God predestined us in love so that we would be adopted as sons and daughters through Jesus (1:5). We have redemption in Christ through his blood and our sins are forgiven (1:7). We have received an inheritance (1:11) and were sealed with the Holy Spirit (1:13). We are to ask for the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Christ (1:17) and his ask to know the riches and immeasurable greatness of his power towards us (1:20). Jesus has been seated at the right hand of the Father, and he is the head over all things to the church, which is his body. (1:22-23).
Ephesians 2 – We Are Saved By Grace And Are One In Christ
We were dead in our trespasses and sins in which we once walked and carried out the desires of our flesh (1-3). But God, rich in mercy and because of his love for us, made us alive together with Christ. (4-5). We have been saved by grace through faith, not as a result of our woks so that no one may boast (8-9) and we are to walk in the good works he prepared for us beforehand (10). We were aliens and strangers to the covenants of promise but now in Christ, we who were far off have been brought near to God through the blood of Christ (12-13), and we are fellow citizens with all the saints and members of God’s household (19) built on the cornerstone (20) and are being built together in to a dwelling place for God by the Spirit (22).
Ephesians 3 – The Mystery Of The Gospel Is Revealed
We are fellow heirs and members of the same body and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus (6). We have boldness and access in Christ with confidence through our faith in him (12). We are to ask to know the breadth and length and height and depth and know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge (18).
Ephesians 4 – Unity In The Body of Christ
We are to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which we have been called (1), with humility, gentleness, with patience, and bearing with one another in love (4). There is one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, and one baptism (5) and one God and Father (6) who has gifted us with gifts by grace (7). The apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers are given to equip the saints for the work of ministry (11-12) so that we might attain the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Christian. We are to speak the truth in love growing into Christ (15) and we are joined and held together by every equipped joint making the whole body grow and build up itself in love (15-16). We are to put off the old self, and put on the new self (22-24) and we are to be kind and tenderhearted to one another, and forgive one another (32).
Ephesians 5 – Walking In Love
We are to be imitators of God and walk in love abstaining from all sexual immorality, impurity and covetousness (1-3). Our speech should be free of foolish talk, crude joking and be replaced with thanksgiving (4). We are to take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead, we must expose them (11). We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit (18) and give thanks always and for everything to God the Father (20). Wives are to submit to their husbands and husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church (22-25). Our marriages are representations of Christ and the church (32).
Ephesians 6 – Family & Spiritual Warfare & Prayer
Children ought to obey their parents and honor their father and mother (1), and parents should not provoke children to anger but instruct them in the discipline of the Lord (2). Workers should obey their bosses as they would Christ (5), and bosses should stop their threatening because the Lord sees bosses and worker equally (9). We are to put on the whole armor of God to withstand the schemes of the enemy (10). We do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against the present darkness and spiritual forces of evil (13). We are to put on the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness and shoes of the gospel (14-15) and we should take up the shield of faith (16), the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (17) praying at all times through the Holy Spirit keeping alert with perseverance and praying for the church and its leaders (18-19).
