Reflection On This Scripture
Paul reveals something very important to us in this verse. He states that he has heard of the faith of those who believe in Jesus and of the love the Ephesians had for the saints. Paul had heard the powerful testimonies of what Jesus had done in them and among them as well as the life transformations, their spiritual growth and how they loved one another. Love for the saints, is the fruit we bear in response to the work of God in our lives.
Since we began CityLights church, I have been privileged to lead several community groups. In my experience in these groups, when question, “What has God done in your lives this week?” arises, the response has too often been awkward silence. Surprisingly no one has anything to say, nothing to be grateful for, no testimony to share. Could it be possible that Jesus stopped working in our lives for an entire week?
This is something that many of us tend to overlook. For whatever reason we are inconsistent and fail to place value on sharing with others what God is doing in our lives. Maybe we are afraid to share because we don’t have some supernatural goosebump filled story that will leave everyone in the room with their mouths open in amazement. We tend to forget the simple, the every day moments of our Iives that also glorify God. What about the little things such as having opened the scriptures and receiving a new understanding about Christ. Or the fact that while others are losing their jobs, you have been able to keep yours for one more week? What about being grateful that you were able to make it home safely everyday and spend time with your family. Don’t be ashamed to share what Jesus is doing in your life. You may not feel as though you are as eloquent or anointed as the preacher on Sunday but we all have something to share that can serve as an encouragement to someone else. Open your mouth so that others can glorify him as well.
