How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word. I seek You with all my heart; do not let me stray from Your commands. I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You. -Psalm 119:9-11
Jesus is the Word of God made flesh (John 1:1-17). All Scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man (and woman) of God may be complete and thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16). Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6)…the way to intimately know the Father…the truth to combat all lies…and the source of eternal life (Colossians 3:3-4).
Satan is the tempter, accuser and father of lies (John 8:44-45; Revelation 12:9-11), with which he attacks and perverts truth. In a culture steeped in his lies as it regards sexuality, lust and purity, we as the children of God must discern and expose them (Eph. 5:10-11, Hebrews 5:14). His intent is to steal, kill and destroy intimacy with and love for God and one another. But, Jesus Christ has all authority (Matthew 28:18), and has promised that He will purify and present His Bride (the Church) in splendor, holy and without blemish (Ephesians 5:25-27). So, how can we walk in freedom from the devil’s schemes?
Let us together return to the infallible, trustworthy, unchanging Word of God, in order to walk in the truth, repent from lies, renew our minds and know our true identity in Christ. Let us, as the body of Christ, lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let’s run with endurance the race of faith that is set before us, looking to Jesus. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
Jesus said, “If you abide in My word (remain holding fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them)…you will know (intimate, relational, experiential knowledge) the truth, and the truth will set you free. (John 8:31, 32)
What does the Word of God say about sexuality, lust and purity? We have included some of the passages from the Bible that address these areas. However, remember that Scripture must be understood and read in context. So, we encourage you to begin walking through this list in your devotional time with Jesus and in community groups with one another, studying them in context (http://www.biblestudytools.com/), while asking the Holy Spirit to renew your mind, and empower you to walk in the truth.

It’s absolutely critical to note that we were never intended to walk out this walk of faith and fight for purity alone. You are not alone, and God has promised a way of escape from every temptation (I Corinthians 10:12-13; James 1:12-15). Even Jesus Christ was tempted as we are, yet He was without sin and is able to help us in the midst of our temptation (Hebrews 2:18, 4:14-16). Jesus is the way of escape out of every temptation, and by His Spirit, we have been united with Him (Colossians 1:27, 3:3-4).
However, we need one another in a loving, edifying, nurturing community. Hebrews 3:12-13 and 10:19-25 urges us to gather together regularly and spur one another on daily to walk in love, good works and to avoid becoming hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. It is God’s will for the body of Christ to walk life with one another and become one (John 17:20-23). Our prayer is that we will walk out the following pathway to freedom together, growing in intimacy with Jesus and one another, for the glory of God!
The Pathway to Freedom – It will take time and community. Please don’t give up!
1- Come to Jesus- He won’t reject you or condemn you. He’s actually praying for you. (Matthew 11:28-29; Luke 4:17-21; John 15; Hebrews 2:17-18, 4:15-16; Romans 8:34)
2- Call your problem by its right name- sin. (I John 1:5-8; Psalm 51)
3- Confess your specific sin to God and receive His forgiveness and cleansing. (I John 1:8-9) Confess your specific sin to one another and pray for one another to be healed. (James 5:16) Keep open communication with trusted brothers and sisters. No one should reject or condemn one another, rather pray and exhort one another Biblically. (Romans 8:33-34)
4- Cut it off. (Matthew 5:27-30; Colossians 3:4-6) See additional resources below for helpful tools in this step.
5- Conform your thinking to the Word of God. (Psalm 19:7-14; Romans 12:1-2; Philippians 4:8) Use the list of verses provided on the other side of this document to renew your mind and think correctly about sexuality, lust and purity.
6- Commit to put it to death daily by walking in and yielding to the Holy Spirit. (Romans 6:1-14, 7:4-6, 8:12-14; Galatians 5:24-25; I Peter 4:1-3)
7- Choose to trust what God says about your identity whether your feelings validate it or not. (Romans 8:1, 8:31-39; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 2:20)
8- Change will come by God’s grace that trains you. (Titus 2:11-14; Galatians 3:1-6; Ephesians 2:5-10; Philippians 1:6)
9- Claim your inheritance as a son or daughter of God, united with Christ (Ephesians 1:3, 11-14; Galatians 3:26-28, 4:6-7)
10- Contemplate on the greatest pleasure and infinite beauty of the gospel – the union of Christ and the church (Psalm 16:11; Psalm 27:4; Ephesians 2:1-5, 5:25-28; Colossians 1:27; I Timothy 1:13-17)
11- Consecrate your sexuality unto Jesus and He will satisfy you Himself within your singleness (Psalm 16:11; I Corinthians 6:19-20, 7:32-35; Ephesians 5:25-28) or in the covenant of marriage (Genesis 2:24-25; I Corinthians 6:19-20, 7:3-5; Ephesians 5:25-28; Hebrews 13:4)
12- Continually come to Jesus and satisfy your thirst by taking the water of life freely. (John 7:37-39; Revelation 22:17)
